Kriti Sanon has made space for herself in Bollywood with movies like ‘Mimi’ and ‘Do Patti’. The actor recently commented on the nuanced but tangible difference she’s seen between how male and female actors are treated in the industry.

Speaking with NDTV, the actress explained.

Kriti grew up in a household where both her parents worked and shared responsibilities equally. She recalled how this shaped her and her sister, Nupur Sanon, into independent women.

According to Kriti, she never felt that being a girl limited her dreams. Her mother, however, had to fight simply for the right to study and, in doing so, gave up many personal hobbies.

This sacrifice, according to Kriti, made her appreciate the fact that she was so privileged to have the choice of picking her own direction.

Despite her successful journey, Kriti Sanon confessed that the journey had not always been equitable. She described the instances where she used to feel shortchanged as a result of the differential treatment accorded to her male co-actors.

“It hasn’t come up too frequently, but little things count,” she replied. “Such as when the male actor receives a larger car or a better accommodation. It’s not the car. It’s that I should not be made to feel smaller merely because I’m a woman. All I desire is equality.”

Kriti also spoke of how unconscious tendencies mirror inherent prejudices. For instance, she said that occasionally assistant directors (ADs) would summon the female actor on set beforehand while leaving the male actor waiting. She has had to instruct them to desist from doing so, reminding one and all that such actions, although minor-seeming, form part of the larger issue of disparity.

“The mindset has to change,” she said.

Kriti Sanon gave an unforgettable performance in ‘Mimi’ (2021), playing the character of a surrogate mother. Her performance earned her the National Film Award and the Filmfare Award for Best Actress.

But success hasn’t been linear for Kriti. Post ‘Mimi’, she featured in some big releases that failed, including the much-hyped ‘Adipurush’ (2023).

Her comedy horror movie ‘Bhediya’ (2022) was well received, demonstrating her skill at playing both serious and light-hearted roles.

She has come back strong the past few years with powerful performances and box-office hits. ‘Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya’ and ‘Crew’ (2024) both played well with people. She also won over audiences in ‘Do Patti’ (2024), where she acted out two vastly different characters in the same movie.
